the end is almost frickin' nigh

Not the entirety of my todo but it's at least the doable, not-too-emotinally-stressful, no-failure-fear, house-related part. At least now I can strike off each part and be done with it. (Too bad I'm making the list now rather than three days ago, or I could add: regrout & seal, recaulk master bath, and then knock it off as done... if messily done.) In rough order -- at least by my guess -- of what needs to happen for the kitchen to be Done.
Trying to put these in some kind of consecutive logical order. Uhm.
I don't know. It just might be manageable... wow.
parts list ... have lots of this in workshop. must go check against list.
...Will update in a few, with rest of list -- eh, this is just to keep me organized; you can ignore if you like.
Updated. Also, CP asked me tonight what if he doesn't get into this univ's doctoral program, and we move elsewhere? What about all this work?
Way I see it, first, there's a lot that's jury-rigged in this kitchen, but I've learned tons, not just in the past few but in doing drywall and curves and support beams, and building sturdy indestructible shelves and mitering and all that jazz. And second, in some things, the joy ain't in living with it, but in creating it.
Besides, if we lived here eight years and by then I was completely done, I'd be bored.
and trust me, you don't want a bored Sol wandering around the house...
Trying to put these in some kind of consecutive logical order. Uhm.
- build cabinet over fridge
- build withdrawable shelves for cookbooks
- build niche between fridge cabinet & wall
- put in drywall cleats
- put in drywall, mud, prime
... and two corners will be almost there. - put in prop for new countertop height
- install window borders: bottom, left, right, top
- carry trim to cabinet
and window will have achieved sill! - build shelves for island
- shape & install bar top
- build & install drawerfronts
- shape & cut countertop
... and island will be done. - build oven lift
- call installer & have bastard come back out & do it right this time
- remove oven, put on riser
- re-install microwave shelf, spaced higher
- insert 23" plywood scraps for filler
... and oven will finally be whole! - set up date for sink installation
- remove old sink
- remove countertop
- install sink risers
- build top drawer for cabinet
- install countertop, very rough cut for sink
- have installers detach dishwasher, reinstall on riser
- have installers put in new sink
then for finishing: - install wrap-around base for sink
- install new drawer fronts, finished
- install new doors, finished
- cut corner cabinets, install support
- build & install new trash/recyc drawer unit
- build doors for fridge cab, base cab, oven unit
- veneer, dye, seal carcasses
- do concrete seal on countertops
- strip vinyl flooring (ugh)
- do concrete seal on floors
I don't know. It just might be manageable... wow.

...seems easier than dealing with sand/condition/sand/dye/seal/sand/seal plywood just for stinkin' back of shelves when crosswise support isn't needed.
[yo, crafts folks, any ideas on supplier/place to find sturdy cold-press/non-rippled non-museum-quality kind of thin but sturdy cardboard?]

Date: 11 Mar 2007 09:35 pm (UTC)Usually, it's an updated kitchen and bathrooms that will "sell" a place before anything else. The only thing that rates higher in most buyers minds is the exterior (landscaping, roof, siding, etc.) of the home. Make it pretty and they will come with offers.
