...is that you start out, in all innocence, looking up truth serum to find out if it's actually real or just memorex hollywood, and suddenly it's three hours later and you've read about the Bunny Man of Fairfax County, gaslighting, the break-ins at the Watergate, Munchausen by Internet, and somehow ended up on biographies of lesser-known but no less chilling serial murderers from the '20s, capped with a pleasant finale of fictional lethal viruses.

Wtf, wiki, you need an off button.

My recent timesink has been SomethingAwful's forums. It catches a lot of crap for being a $10 to access forum but I've learned a hell of a lot from that place. I've spent my last two work shifts reading about really weird history stuff from around the world -- which then lead me into buying 3 history books so continue researching.

Of course for every awesome history / ghost story thread there's a thread about "What are your terrible habits as a bachelor?" so...

Wiki is bad. TVTropes is pure crack on steroids.

Surface? You can surface from TVTropes? I thought you just had to wait until you passed out from exhaustion! And even then I have to make sure to turn the computer off as soon as I wake up before it catches me again... ;)

I think the problem is that even if they did have an off button, no one would use it.

Wtf, wiki, you need an off button.

This. I swear to god, this. I do the exact same thing, it starts out innocently enough:

"Hmmm what does/what is this...."

and then BAM! three hours later I have filled my brain with useless information, that I only store in hopes I would need them whenever I go on Jeopardy! or if some undercover TV show pops out to ask people questions as a means to measure the intelligence of people >_>

After these binges, I usually delete my history, I don't want people to speculate on what thoughts the Wiki-train may take me.

Munchausen by Internet?!

I'd heard of that happening, but I didn't think it was widespread enough that it's officially a syndrome with a name.

...so wait, from truth serum you ended up there?

Most commonly heard when Quill looks back on 50 something wiki tabs: Dude!! WTF?? How did I get from there to there?!

It has an off button! It's that little tab-closing X.

Wiki just seems to make us all incapable of using that.

(At least it's better than TVTropes, where you think "I could close this tab..." and then find yourself immediately opening five more to counteract that heretical thought.)

It's horrible when you're studying and you wind up on wiki to do "research". A few hours later and homework remains unfinished...

Well, you guys have much more dynamic browsing histories. I always end up on weird stuff about how the chemical formula for some chemical precursor gets tweaked with a methylation into something else, and then into something else, and suddenly we're looking at the horrible medieval history of dyestuffs like woad, and stinky jobs like indigo, when all I wanted to check on was whether a particular drug is an NAO inhibitor or something innocuous like that.
Wait a minute--now I can't even remember why I thought I needed to be looking up NAO inhibitors.
Can't we go have fun with something like varroa mites on bees or how to eat kudzu or something?
