on iChat, because I can, and I must share:
Sol: The idea of "one archive with all pairings from genfic to hardcore" does seem to be something lacking in Naruto as much as in FmA.
Saro: Yeah, it is. It really, definitely is. There isn't a whole lot of good fic, either. Sadly.
Sol: Yeah, well, that does take time. The stuff folks say in GW are the "classics" pretty much, with few exceptions, suck rocks.
Saro: *nods* The Naruto fanbase is mostly pretty young, which doesn't help. There are a few good teenage writers, but it's pretty uncommon.
Sol: All the more reason to encourage more genfic. Not saying pr0n isn't okay for kids, cause I don't care, but genfic does force more focus on plot and character, less on "get to the lemon!!" Encouraging genfic therefore encourages writing development. IMO.
Saro: *nods* Genfic has to have a plot in there somewhere. Smut... not so much.
Sol: They all do, but with genfic you notice the lack a great deal faster.
Saro: People aren't as willing to put up with genfic on the promise that something will happen. Romance, putting, "X and Y character will hook up" in your summary or author's note is enough to keep people reading for a few chapters at least.
Sol: Yah, that's pretty much it. If you can't identify the conflict by the end of the first chapter in genfic, you're sunk.
Saro: You need a real hook in genfic. As opposed to a hint that someone may like like someone else.
Sol: Absolutely. Although the second is a lot easier to write!
Saro: That's it! We've figured out the real attraction to hook up fics. They're easier.
Sol: Well, YEAH! Less work all around, really.
Saro: I thought it was because you got more reviews.
Sol: You agonize, angst, but you KNOW they'll get together in the end. Oh, well, that too: reviews. And no plot required except boy fish meets boy fish, boy fish loses boy fish, boy fish gets killed going over hydraulic dam.
Saro: *cracks up!* That's 90% of Naruto yaoi in a nutshell.
Sol: ROFL. One, the other, or sometimes for the really good authors, BOTH boy fish!
Saro: And then you have sushi.
Sol: bwahahahahahaha
