(am I allowed to pimp? is it considered pimping if the actual venue is both online and free? what's the etiquette, james?)

thanks! it's probably my favorite of anything I've written, even if it's a radically different style than usual.

I remember this one! I like it a lot; it's very spare but evokes a lot of emotion. Only now I want barbecue. (Eastern NC, naturally.)

"very spare" -- y'know, you're right, that's the best description, and possibly why one long-time-reading friend commented that it "feels" rougher than my usual style, but that's kinda what I like about it. Although I guess I am biased... but thank you!

As for barbecue, I'm partial to Georgia, myself. My dad's been known to drive back all day from Macon with a cooler of barbecue from the pit-place near his old high school, and then bring it over so he and I can indulge. Long distance awesomeness.

I cannot ever fathom of a way that announcing this in your own journal would not be appropriate. In fact, I am linking to it from my journal as well, and I hope you don't mind.

And that was gorgeous. Thank you.

Well, I gave serious thought to never spilling my pen-name in my journal because I have reviewed authors' works and it seems like best to keep those separate -- but I already keep my work-name separate, and I can only compartmentalize so much. So, yeah, pimpage.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and highly complimented by the link. Thank you!

You are totally appropriate! And brilliantly talented. This is my second favourite -- I think you know what my favourite is -- of all that you have written.

Yes, I know, no Garrett in it, but, uhm, next time! Maybe. Depends on what gets published next... heh. First I need to finish the kitchen floor, at least. Fffftt.

Glad you enjoyed it!

(And I don't know if you'd seen this (http://kaigou.livejournal.com/546638.html), but it seems That Boy sneaks into everything...)

Thank you!

(Ask CP about the orange fur coat -- that's as close to pimp hat as anyone's going to get in this house.)

Thank you! -- and even though several published short-story folks said they liked it, I didn't think it'd ever find a home. But the venue just seemed perfect, with its focus, so I figured I'd give it a shot and see. Wah. (Though I don't expect to be publishing any other short stories, to be honest -- it's such a difficult and complex art, really.)

Yeah, the people who say "oh, write a few short stories as training for a novel" are so bogus...short stories are hard.

Thank you, in return! It's nice to know that a nutball character can still be a publishable nutball character.

Ah lordy.... what a great read! I loved all the emotional subtext in this. *sigh* Your work just keeps on getting better and better! Thanks so much for the link. And don't be shy about the self-pimping -- you deserve it!!!

Thanks. It probably is my favorite of anything I've ever written, even if (as Hinotori pointed out) it's in a radically different style than usual. Doubt I've got another one in me like that, but that's fine, one is probably enough per lifetime.

Ahhh, I have so little time for reading these days but I had to look at this and I'm so glad I did. I still love these characters so much.

It's quiet and lovely and subtle in the best of ways, but poignant enough in places to make me blink back tears. Make that lots of places. Just beautiful. ♥

Thank you for sharing this link; it was lovely, and mysterious, and bittersweet. I'm far from my own brother, and loved this tale of siblings who are strangers to each other, managing to find their own connection.
