1. Reply that you wish to take part, and I will pick four of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee!
recession picked these four:

I don't recall who specifically had this one, but I went off to find the creator & get a copy of my own. It's from Ergo Proxy, and through the middle section of the series, Pino (an AI/robot character) reads her one book over and over, often while trying to drown out the noise of the annoying adult(s) in the background. The personal statement works without knowing the series, though, which is part of why I like it. It's a sort of sulky, pouty kind of disgruntlement, but it's one I use when my disgruntlement is more related to fiction rather than real life.

I found this image when sorting through stock photos for something else, and ended up iconifying it because I wanted an icon that expressed the sentiment "sucks to be you" (or sometimes even, sucks to be me) without being too obstreperous about it. I use this one when there's not really a true emotional investment in the bad news, more of a "them's the breaks" kind of bad/unwelcome/sucky information.

I think this one came from the HP fandom -- not really sure -- or possibly from one of those icon sets made up of random fan/crit comments. But I like it, though I don't use it that often. I mostly use it, I guess, when the discussion is fandom-based, and I'm disgusted not necessarily with someone being stupid, so much as going about something stupidly: a variation on "the premise was good but the execution sucked."

Ahhhhh, this one has its own entire LEGEND.
Every year, a group of us meet up at Akon, in Dallas. Two years ago -- well, three years ago come this summer -- we all went to dinner at the hotel restaurant on the first night of the con. A whole assortment of us, as I recall:
sihaya,
cosplayeriori,
christeos_pir,
pixiepilot,
flamesword,
haya5h1, and am I forgetting anyone? I can't recall, now. (Wasn't
zealchan also with us?) Anyway, about halfway through dinner for some reason I had my room card out, and actually bothered to read it. The Adams Mark Hotel had a new advertising campaign and on the top of the card it said something like:
The most fungible guest program ever!
At which point I asked -- and I recall this brought the entire table's conversation to a dead halt -- "Just what the hell is fungible?"
CP's suggestion, I think, was that it sounded like some kind of bad rash. Haya5hi thought it had to do with banking, something about being as liquid as cash, and it was Flamesword who promptly brought out the laptop, declared she could get a signal, and googled it for us. (Of course, while she was going about trying to find the real meaning, the rest of us were riffing horribly off the original suggestions.)
[I still have that room card, incidentally. It even ended up going with me to Australia.]
"Fungible" has become a kind of Akon-related running gag. Cosplays are fungible, jager traditions are fungible, just about anything can be fungible -- it makes for a great word to just toss in at any point. It makes the little fanboys back away from us, almost as well as when two people stand behind a third and hiss, "shun the unbeliever! shun! shun! shunnnnnnnnnnnnnNUH!" Unless, of course, we can coax Duo into standing on a chair and reciting the Akon rant at the top of his lungs in the middle of the artists' gallery.

I like to know where these things come from.....

Date: 24 Apr 2008 03:15 am (UTC)The second is from Lord of the Rings. What's her name yells, "I am no man" and whacks the head off that scary dude. You can see that I know my LOTR really well - but I use that icon when I am defending women or women's rights.
The third is the Stanford University logo. I went to graduate school there. I use it when I post about Snodfart.
The fourth is from Practical Magic, and it quotes Sally telling the sheriff that things have power if we believe in them. So, I use that when the ocassion calls for believing in something -- as when I'm writing a post to encourage a fellow scribe to believe in herself.
Thanks for asking!

Date: 24 Apr 2008 10:41 pm (UTC)1. Ahhhhh, Choice - it's a popular one. XD I drew a strange character in a top hat for the hell of it, and liked the inks and general outcome enough to icon it. Decided that as a character it was a demon of Choice that tended to speak in different voices, but haven't done much with it, alas.
2. The lovely
3. While watching the Last Order OVA, I got a bit fixated on this screenshot of Sephiroth and his sad, sad face, so I wanted to make a bad-day kind of icon out of it. The shark thing is a college group in-joke about all the ridiculous hoops you have to go through to get anywhere in Resident Evil 2, and what the employee complaint box must've been like... "Dear Corporate, today I had to solve three puzzles and use five ancient relics just to get to the break room. And there were sharks."
4. An OC fox-demon character of mine who goes by Chelidon (Greek word for the swallow) and has a penchant for eating people who bother him or his ward Aedon (the nightingale and matching icon with this one). They're sort of inspired by the Procne/Philomela/Tereus myth - sort of. More that Chelidon feels a particular kinship with the story and thus associates himself with it and references it frequently. They don't have a Tereus-hoopoe, but that's probably just as well.
