Basically, it's just a lever, and the longer the lever, the more... leverage you've got. (You knew that was coming.)
It's only recently I found out how shipwheels have anything to do with steering (rudder). Which is crazy considering I rebuilt a steering wheel and mechanism on an Austin-Healey when I was in college, and yet never once connected "how these parts work" with other wheels used for steering, like on ships.
