And more sail = more speed, right? (Well, up to the breakeven point, since I'd guess there's a point of diminishing returns.) So square rigger benefit is that you can go much faster as long as you have the wind right behind you or very close to it, while a bermuda or junk rig means you might not go as fast but you can take advantage of iffy wind directions that would leave a square-rigged stuck?
