Textbook publishers have already jumped on the multimedia idea; Harcourt, for example, has an elementary science series that comes with not only an optional CD version, but with access to a website that features videos, online activities and links, etc, that can be accessed by teachers with a special password. But the only author I can think of that has made an purposeful attempt at multimedia was Le Guin: "Always Coming Home" included a cassette set of music and poetry set in that world.
