It's even sitting right here on my shelves next to my computer, and it still took me this long to reply, sorry! It's "The Weaker Vessel", by Antonia Fraser. She's a romance novelist who was doing research on an upcoming novel, and started seeing a pattern in the contemporary reports from the English Civil War. So although iirc she's not an academic, it's a massive tome of all the primary sources she gathered about the expansion of women's roles during the war: as business owners, as preachers/priests, in education, and so on.
