You can also set up many types of companies without a lawyer, too... but if you're going to do it right, it still seems wisest to me that if you're not experienced, then you find someone who is. Most of the time, that someone is a lawyer.
I figured I wouldn't go into all the myriad crazy types of NFPs, though, since that might make brains start hurting. Although... if I were making this post now, I probably wouldn't even mention NFPs, to be honest -- not with the current wank going on with AO3/OTW/whatever.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people currently have the impression that NFPs are just a surefire path to self-destruction, which is really a pity. Certainly, NFPs have some serious growing pains what-with founder's syndrome, and the whole "I do this because I BELIEVE so I don't HAVE to be sane about it" wackiness... but there are a lot of successful, quietly hard-working NFPs out there. Possibly a lot more than the crazy imploding ones, but it's only the crazy imploding ones that get the negative wanky attention.
