While generally opposed to all advertising, if you were looking to supplement the funding of a fanish service, I'd look at the Ravelry advertising model. They only accept exceptionally targeted advertising, and as such, can sell their adds for much more than they otherwise could. And in general, they are ads that people are interested in seeing.
It would be a bit trickier on a fanish service than on Ravelry, because the targeted interest is pretty obvious there: YARN (and knitting needles), but there are a few obvious starting points.
For people to write off donations to your non-profit you have to be a special kind of non-profit. But my knowledge on these things ends precisely THERE.
But I like the idea.
Having no concept of what a PM does, I can't help you there.
