In the case of applications where the content is user-generated, that's what I meant by where LJ went really wrong: they started abrogating those users who were content-generators. That's pretty much doing what you're warning about: they reduced the content.
In a way, I see content-producing sites as self-fulfulling. If we get bored with what we're producing, we just produce something different. Like here, frex. If I get tired of one fandom, I just start writing about a different one, and now there's even more content (and more varied, at that) for others to consume.
