I'm thinking a lot of some of the free to play games that are out there, where content is a hook to have people pay. And people pay a lot for the ability to customize and look pretty or convience such as moving/leveling faster, or elite status over others. Socialising brings more players and makes existing ones want to play more which makes payment a more worthwhile feature. But I have to wonder where how you can bring in that break down of additional services.

Aarinfantasy is purely donation and gives a thank you to donators with a larger icon and flashy status symbol. You can also store slightly more features.

Diiago has better search for paid users, inboard has archive features, a service I am thinking of is planning on making it pay for inbuilt collaboration features and the ability to use it for things outside it's original market. (the major content it provides is free and will always be free)

On adverts, I actually don't mind ads, unless they are aggressive, lj current ads are so obnoxious that thy can make the site unfunctional for me. Perhaps that is part of banner blindness although some people use advertisements as a way of name brand recognition. The more you see that brand the ore likely you will eventually try it out.
