hrm. I really like the idea of just letting users label it themselves if it is decided that we need to/want to. My knee-jerk reaction to getting too detailed about this kind of thing to just let it be anarchy and the users will figure it out. I can see so many possibilities for using this, which is why I would argue for looser structure rather than tighter.
Unless we want people to be able to search on the group level by 'kind of group'. Which is when the predetermined ones would come in.
Actually I'm going to put on my nerd-hat and say that having a few pre-populated site-wide options would be really cool for when you I wanted to find all the series'. But it does add a few wrinkles to things.
On the other hand, it isn't like fandom hasn't come up with a method for making tags and finding them across users even when they are not all identical/the same, so I'm back to where I started.
I think if this gets implemented, we/you/they should solicit LOTS of feedback/ideas from people about how they would expect/want something like that to work.
