Oh, I didn't actually read the damn list of characters. I'm just never impressed when such is included -- except when it's a script. Otherwise, I expect the book to do the introducing for me. A list is not acceptable.
It wasn't that I minded Companion all that much. It was adequate for an afternoon's passage, but the overuse of unfamiliar terms really started to bog. Not at all the same kind of slowing-down as for a story like The Hero's Walk, which took me off-and-on (with the second half setting aside everything else to focus on that one book) over three days. That's, like, three times as long as it normally takes me to read a book that speed -- but it wasn't because the story bogged. It was because I was busy, y'know, enjoying every bit of it.
