I finished Havemercy with the distinct impression of having read a loosely-plotted fanfic (and slight annoyance at how a lot of things were all about the boys, and the white dudes win! Again). But I did manage to enjoy A Companion to Wolves when I realized it was Pern-with-dragons, and better characterized.
You just hit the nail on the head re: italics and works not in English, though. I ran away from Amy Tan for that reason (yeah, I'm Chinese, but I couldn't take it anymore), and in a lot of other books the authors tend to take diabolical pleasure in showing off their knowledge of other cultures - which is nice, until I realize I have a handwritten glossary for all the words they're using.
In the context of SFF and fantasy, though, what is your opinion on Game of Thrones and the ASIF series in general? (I ask because I feel like the only one in a circle of fantasy fans to not like the book...)
