This is why you read a lot of SFF, too. And I totally agree about the pronunciation guide. I'm not so stressed when it's a clearly made-up name (in which case, I feel free to make up my own way to say it!) but when it's a real name, I do want to know. Besides, I have had the opportunity to tell someone who's been startled because I knew how to pronounce their (uncommon in English) name: "Ah, I read a great book where the hero had the same name."
(Aside: it just occurred to me that I should be telling you to read Hokuton-punch's journal, who's in, uhm, York, or thereabouts, studying medieval calligraphy (writing?). Lots of posts about Carolingian and, uhm, other writing styles. Just FYI, FWIW.)
