For some reason, the bit about accepting a certain amount of slacking when the author's the only one out there really struck a chord with me. I've noticed that I'll accept much worse plotlines if the book involves gay male leads, for example. Online, I'll read much worse fanfiction that involves my favorite pairings, or an obscure fandom. If it's Suikoden II Flik/Viktor fanfic, I'll forgive just about anything. (It's getting close to that point with Roy/Ed FMA fanfic; no one's writing it anymore.) If it's Harry Potter, it'd better be /really really good/.
Also, for some reason I find it hilarious that Anne Rice is also known for porn, although hers is at least marketed /as porn/, and under another name originally. (Actually, I felt a little sorry for Anne Rice, because people were publicly saying that her husband must have written all the books for her, which was just mean, not to mention kind of inappropriate speculation for an Amazon review.)
