But did they identify it as fanfiction? I would think that one trademark of fanfiction is the requirement that you denote credit (in some way, however limited) to the canonical author. That doesn't always mean a lengthy disclaimer, but most fandoms I've seen do, in some way, expect you to clearly label (or make it clearly known) that you're working in a fanfiction framework. But wouldn't it be even more ambiguous if it's (fan)fiction that has labels and expectations (or lack of both), and for which the story could just as easily be true original fiction? If there's nothing otherwise to differentiate, I mean.
