You might also try a historian who specializes in American History, or in Black History or literature. Frex, Tales of Conjure and the Color Line. (Though that rec may be biased since I know the author, ehehe.) Many of the southern colleges/universities have such a department, so you might try tweaking your local network to see who knows who at a Southern university, that might specialize in the Southern myth.
