I was a distant cousin of my first husband (not first cousins!!!) because our families had both been in the area forever.
Hah, same here -- fifth cousin once removed, actually. We were already married (and joking about the whole marry-your-cousins thing) when my grandmother suddenly asks my SO whether his family was from some town in northern Alabama. On his father's side, yes... and then it turns out, despite us being in the DC area and both miles away from there, we'd still hooked two parts of the family back together.
Even now -- after being divorced for, oh, over ten years, my mother still asks about him. The last time she did, I asked her why she asked, after all, I'd never seen her ask about any of my sister's long-ago exes. My mom replied: "but he's not just your ex, he's your fifth cousin." Heh.
