Thanks for the interesting links, esp. the Folk Tales!

The observation "Korean society is obsessed with education" recalled an incident in a kindergarten class at my former school. The mother complained about her child being the only Korean among all Hispanics, but the principal pointed out that this class was her only option until her child passed the ESL test, and promised her that she could sit in the back of the class until she was reassured that her child was treated properly. So for three days Mom followed the kids into class, and if her child was not in the front row, she made the other kids move, over the teacher's protests. She bullied the poor first-year teacher into always giving her child first choice of materials and being first in line. She could be heard down the hall haranguing the teacher: "Why you not ask XXX that question? She know answer! Those children not know! Those children STUPID!! You BAD TEACHER!!!" The principal called in our Korean interpreter, who tried talking to her, then explained that this woman was just nuts, and it really had little to do with Korean culture, the teacher, the school, etc. Then the family moved, to everyone's relief. But I've always wondered what happened to that kid, and her crazy mom.
