Hah, actually... I never did get the hang of f-stops and all that jazz. Mostly I just memorized cases, like "if the light is this much, and the subject is this far away, and the film is this, and I want a depth of field that's shallow, then I should step up/down". And failing that, I'd bracket -- take a picture, adjust the f-stop one, take another picture, adjust, etc. Figured that way I had to get it right somewhere in there, and at least it saved me from having to ask CP for the nth time, "what does aperture mean, again?"
Okay, mostly I just really liked to look at things, and cameras give you an excuse to do just that. Ehehe.
