Bear in mind that my first fanfic was along the same lines: I mean, I did post it to a public site where others in the fandom could read it (thanks be to major multi-fandom archives online, eh), but I didn't interact with the fandom, I didn't join any fandom-based forums or elists, and I didn't even read any other authors in the fandom, for that matter. So I do get that it's possible to create fanfiction separate from fandom influence... what I've been twigging on is that there seems to be a distinct (if differing, based on fandom) set of styles or clues that indicate whether a work is direct-from-canon or by-way-of-fandom. Sometimes, that's the presence of fanon or privileging fanon over canon, but not always.
That all said, fandom must serve some purpose in the creative process, or what use do we have for it, that we'd keep it around (except as easy-accessible audience for produced derivative works)?
