I need to stop giving examples. Maybe I should just say, "For instance, ____, also, _____." and let others fill in the blanks. (No, it's not just you, I think it's just that I deliver examples like they're the ONLY examples, since that seems to be how they're so often read.) That is to say: arguments about whether anything is OOC is only applicable to some canons, but ALL fandoms have some point of dissension based on some kind of understanding of the original narrative that's being referenced. No one group will ever be in total agreement on the interpretation of anything, and fandom is far too eloquent or just plain fanatical to ever be an exception.
I think for me, I've come to the point where I can say: all fanfiction is derivative fiction, but not all derivative fiction is fanfiction... and then I have to be truthful and add: except for when fanfiction is not derivative.
And for my next trick, I shall be in the corner, kicking the cat.
