Unless, I'd think, they're able to demonstrate that they come with a ready-made (and excessively vocal) fandom of their work, independent of the production house. A smaller investor (or combination of smaller investors) might be willing to let them have free reign -- and more rights, including the often-ignored but very valuable sweat equity as basis for percentage of profits -- and have faith that they can create another product as well-respected and admired as Avatar. It's possible; anything is possible, of course. But it would also depend on whether or not the existing fanbase could be, or would be, open to supporting another project, or if many of those supporters are tied specifically to Avatar and wouldn't necessarily extend that admiration for a different story and characters.
