It was their first major project, they were young, etc. etc.
The irony is that, feasibly, it could have been their twentieth project and they'd be in their sixties and they still probably would have no say in it. Ownership of the copyright going to the financial backers is, unfortunately, simply the way that television and media control their products. You would really have to be a Rowling or a King (or a Meyers) to have any say otherwise, and even then... I mean, look at what they did to LeGuin.
