I really should not have to tell you what reference this screen is making. Okay, if you know Kuroshitsuji then I shouldn't have to tell you.

This one should be a bit more obvious.

Alright, people, let's fire this baby up and get the show on the road.

Last we talked, I mentioned Shizuo's little brother is an actor, right? Incidentally voiced by the same voice actor who played Kuran Kaname, in Vampire Knight. Except that in Durarara!!, his big break was in...

If you can't catch the part where it's cut off, it says, VAMPIRE NINJA. And here's our obligatory Darker than Black homage.

I'm suspecting the chick on the right is also an obvious reference, but I can't put my finger on what-to. Given the pattern, it'll be a series either produced by Brains Base (see list) or directed by Takahiro Omori (see list).

Trying to avoid spoilers, so I'll only say that at one point, these two characters get a phone call at roughly the same time. Makes for some snappy movements needed to grab these screen shots. Which was hard, because as soon as I heard Mamiko Noto's eerie little-girl voice asking that iconic question, I was too busy going WHATWHAT to react. But, catch these I did.

Our dear otaku on the left is Walker Yumasaki, voiced by Yuuki Kaji -- who also plays Finny in Kuroshitsuji. How apropos... but not nearly as much as the email alert on his friend's phone.

This is where I explain that the character on the right -- Erika Karisawa -- is voiced by Ayahi Takagaki, who played Kitazaki in Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori and then came back to play Moriyama Jun in Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae. The first time, she sent someone to hell; the second time, she was the one going. You'd think she'd heard 'Ippen shinde miru' enough already, eh?

And if you don't know this face...

...or this one...

then a lot of the in-jokes in the previous post probably missed you.

Now, onto the screenshots of, uh, screens. These amuse the hell out of me. And I actually think Yohoo is cooler than Yahoo.

What is Amoeba supposed to be a riff off? Anyone? Anyone?

Someone really needs to go to that URL and see what's there. Someone who understand Japanese. Someone who is not me.

I'm guessing... message board? I think the sub-group was in a hurry, because this episode didn't get any but the most blatant text translated, and even that was inconsistent. Tip from anonymice (in comments): likely a riff on 2chan. Of course!

Anyone make any guesses on what this site is for and/or riffing on?

I am guessing a dating forum, though that seems a little, erm, unusual for a high school sophomore. Uhm. Okay, maybe not. And I bet kids don't even hang out at the malls anymore, either.

Another one that is referencing something I've no idea of -- and no, I couldn't seem to get a better shot that shows more of the image, but I'm willing to bet you it's another reference.

Or the reference might be purely internal, though in this case that white thingie (image on the right) reminds me of the little white things in Princess Mononoke.

Or maybe it's just the image Dotachin likes to use as his avatar. Could be.

And now, onto the street interviews.

We've got the girls from Real Drive, with Minamo Aoi in the foreground (talking). I can't recall her friends' names. Been awhile since I watched the show, but they're pretty distinctive for being realistic character designs and not being all stick-thin and scrawny-legged.

I'm fairly certain these are the three main leads from Eden of the East, with Saki Morimi in the middle, Micchon on the left, and I want to say Sister on the far right, but I'm not positive.

I really, really want to say Lupin on this one, but beats the hell out of me.

This one... I have no idea. Seems so familiar, though.

In this shot, the guy's talking about how "when you get old like me", and I'm wondering if this is a reference to that hit manga about the salaryman who lives the life of, well, a salaryman. Though I think he's worked his way up to middle manager after twenty volumes.

It's either a Macross reference or a Gurren Lagann reference, but neither Brains Base nor Takahiro Omori have done any work on any of the Macross franchise. So, got me.

And lastly... this guy looks so familiar. I don't think it's Pantsu (from Eden of the East), but...

Yes, it is a crazy series.

the URL says "niru-chan," so it's definitely a riff of 2chan, the (in)famous image board from which 4chan was modeled.

That's the only one I know.

And "nixi" is a riff off of "mixi," another social network site like nichanneru (2chan).

There is no amazon.shop.to, and the product id number is too short even if you go to amazon.co.jp, so no joy there.

Okay, so ... Amoeba, nixi, and lovedoor are the blogging / networking services Ameba, MIXI, and Livedoor, respectively. Rakudai is e-bay / etsy-like Rakuten (it'll redirect you to their English site, but if you click "Japanese" at the bottom, you'll get the original).

I may have to start watching this series. ...once I'm done with the "$%!"§$% papers.

Ameba and Livedoor are two of the major Japanese blogging sites. Ameba also runs Poupee Girl and other things of that sort or is affiliated with them or something. Mixi has, what, like an 80% market share of the social networking stuff in Japan?

That last screencap guy really reminds me of the secondary male in highschool of the dead. (though i don't know if it was ever made into an anime.) But I have to say the trio of girls really don't reming me of any of the eden of the east characters. ^^; Saki especially had orange hair... unless that's an appearance change they got in the last eps, I never finished watching.

As others noted, Niru-chan is a riff of 2-chan; Amoeba is a riff on Ameblo (a Japanese blog/social networking site I'm familiar with in part thanks to some Breath of Fire fanartists having accounts there), Lovedoor is a riff of Livedoor, Nixi is (as previously noted) a riff of mixi.jp, and Rakudai is a riff of Rakuten (as noted, an Ebay/Yahoo-esque auction and shop site).

I should be scared that I surf Japanese websites enough for BoF and Mononoke-related stuff to know this ;_;
