"because you never know who just might be pissed enough to let your editor in on the secret."
They won't care in all probability. Which is not a reason to do it. I've said for a long time that reheated fanfiction is a cheat on the reader and customer, and lousy reading besides. A lot of my fellow m/m authors hate my guts for saying that. But then some of them write pro guides on how to file the numbers off so they obviously think it's very cool. Unfortunately, if the advice is as superficial as 'change the name/hair/mask' then the fiction is still going to suck. You had it right in your other post - the structure is all wrong in reheated fanfic.
The exception to this and where I don't have a problem is when the original fic was so AU, that calling it fanfic was a bit of a cheat. Personally I enjoy making new stories up enough to not ever want to recycle old ones (when I'm done with a story, I want to move on) but the work in a good AU is considerable - because the structure has to be made from new - and I can understand not wanting to waste it if you don't write fast or in large amount.
But then don't market the damn thing to the original fannish community or try and flog it by having voice actors from the original anime, you know, *read excerpts* for you.

It's kind of a giveaway, really.
