I feel sort of like I should be waving a cane at you, or clacking my dentures at you or something, a suitably old-person kind of sense when I gasp, "what!? you've not read Rubyfruit Jungle? It's a classic of the genre! Hie thee to the library, stat!"
Except I also feel compelled to note that it came out in, uhm, 1971, I think... so it's been awhile. (Not that I read it in '71, mind you. I'm not THAT old.) But from '71 to the mid-90s easy, it wasn't just one of the best, it was one of the only ones. Fortunately, it's also one of the best, so it retains its classic status not just for being among the first but because it really is a great story.
