random ruminations
19 Sep 2007 02:08 pmI've been sent word by a sweet little bird that there's been movement on AJU. Which, in all, I'm too far behind, with little motivation to backtrack. But I've got the time to catch a post or two and give it a chance (though it appears this means living with being completely lost on some details).
That's not really why I'm posting, though. This isn't about that, so much as recollection of Tom Bodet's spoken-word recording. In the introduction he says, his goal is to tell the everyday stories, of everyday people, with the hopes that someone listening may say -- in a sort of pleased-surprised-content way -- "Yeah, it's just like that."
It's a goal of common recognition of humanity in the small stories.
That expression has stayed with me ever since: yeah, it's just like that. The point in a story where you are no longer looking through a glass onto a world from which you'll always be the observer. The point where the right words in the right order in a single sentence shift the glass to just opaque enough that you're staring at yourself superimposed over the world, the scene, the character.
And you say to yourself: yeah. It's just like that.
