I think that's the dichtonomy that I always experienced between fanfiction and the actual series. Most of the time in ffs he's seen as only capable of following orders, the perfect killer and assassin, the emotionless machine. For me, that always grated a little. I couldn't quite reconcile the two views - on the one hand the young man that would much rather flee than fight, on the other the merciless killer that confronts a young woman with a death threat. Whether he actually meant it or not.
I guess Heero could see only one way out of the conflict between what he *knew* he was supposed to do, and what he actually *wanted* to do - kill himself.
