I think you and [livejournal.com profile] christeos_pir would get along swimmingly. I believe he's made comments to that effect in the past. But I suspect you're right; the more one believes devoutly in an entire text, the more one must hedge and fudge to make up for the inconsistencies in that text - especially when it's been written over the course of several hundred years by who-knows-how-many-authors, contains passages included solely for political reasons important only to some guy who's been dead now for a hundred generations (or more), and also has known forgeries amongst its passages.
