I was raised on opera and R&B -- we never really had popular music in the house, in the sense of "currently on the radio" -- so it's still a little strange to me sometimes that as I sit here at my desk, I can see the CD shelves and know we have over 2,500 CDs. I only have two ears! How am I supposed to have the time to listen to all of these! (And then I feel guilty for neglecting CDs. Good grief.)
But you listen to enough opera and you learn to listen for the way a story is told in music, tempo, dynamic. It's even clearer, somehow, if the vocals are in an unfamiliar language: it's distilled to sound, instead of intruding on the non-verbal comprehension.
