Y'know, Cletus is apparently a name with a long and proud history, and yet it's inextricably linked in my head as part of the phrase "Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel," and I don't even know where that comes from. A story, maybe? A quote of some sort? I have no idea.
My favorite (even above Amersand) is the name Orange Jello. Excuse me, Or-AHN Jeh-LOW. Ya gotta get the pattern right and then suddenly it sounds like a very cool name... until you realize it's really just Orange Jello.
This is why my mother decided against the name she'd originally picked out for me. It sounds very pretty in its native Swedish - KAH-ren -- but she didn't want to curse me with twelve years of grade school hearing Southern accents mangle it into KaaaaAAAAAaaaayreeeeeEEEEeeennn. As it is, the name she gave me caused enough trouble and even if it's written with one syllable, I don't have a single relative capable of pronouncing it with less than three. It's that long 'a' sound, y'know. Gets 'em every time.
Poor Phuc. Sounds like a great impetus for setting the policy of coming up with your own nickname for a kid, every now and then. I hereby dub thee, BOB! ;-)
