I love talking about names and what they imply about people. I knew some women in college that had older-generation names because their parents were Chinese immigrants and thought Gladys and Mildred sounded pretty. There's also the tradition in some Texas families of naming the female grandchildren with a feminized version of their grandfather's name. I knew a Rebecca whose great-aunts were scandalized that she hadn't been named Verna or Earlene.
