The really scary thing is--this is literally the second fandom I've done the "nadleeh speech" in (the first being over on the gundam_00 community--and yes, for the record, now you know why I am in love with Tieria Erde. :D). I never thought I'd be doing it here, though. :D
And no, you are NOT the only one sick to fucking death of plastic shamans in typical anime. (Nonono, folks, ersatz Lakota does not equal even the majority of First Nations here or their shamanic traditions. :P I can see the fascination, but really, there *are* cultures other than the Plains First Nations. Really.)
And yeah, the genderbendy thing *is* pretty much all over, at least in areas and traditions that never lost the shamanic aspects and all. (And good on you for knowing that particular story re Odin, that's kind of an obscure one :D)
And yeah, I do try to at least get the correct names of First Nations down--it's only respectful and all. :D (I have some Ani kituwagi ancestry myself, better known as Ani tsalagi or Cherokee to most folks, can at least claim Bird clan ancestry on my mom's side--though I'm not a federal NDN because my family was lucky enough to sneak off the Trail of Tears, my folks never got on the Dawes rolls (and rather lived in KY as essentially illegal aliens till 1924 when First Nations people got granted citizenship by act of Congress) and the Qualla Boundary rolls have been closed for some time. (You can still find my ancestors on the rolls taken before the Trail of Tears, though.) Needless to say, my ancestors did not exactly trust the government...)
