I researched onnagata for my masters and plan on continuing this research. It's a kind of weird cap - I saw it on one movie *live* so to say - looks pretty ridiculous, and quite like what you see on this wig. since young actors prostituted themselves in order to live or gain better roles, this purple cap was like a sign of attainable pleasure after a while. Tho bakufu ordered to cut the beautiful hair in order to diminish the boys sex appeal, but the purple cap instead of signaling the ugly part just became a different kind of SIGNAL ^^; people... *shakes head*
Having left such imprint and even remaining on the wigs it also kinda offers in insight into the appeal of onnagata - as a compound of both sexes instead of a weird stage surrogate for female. Which it was - I mean androgynous.
Androgyny had been a huge turn on in Japan from earliest times... modern culture turned the erotic aspect of it upside down with women becoming the consumers on a large scale which also points out different sociological and psychological phenomena. but it's too long to write out here^^;
