My first thought, when you discuss his paraphenalia, though, was: sword, mirror, jems--Amaterasu's three treasures!
Which is what the Imperial Regalia is supposed to be, uh, with a few *cough* replacements due to mishaps between then and now. Right. But still! Yes, which is why I figured one could read that as "divine" just as much as "imperial" -- the way, I guess, Westerners would be more likely to see Excalibur as an indication of mythic stature instead of as connection to the actual, current British crown.
Then again, in reading up on the regalia, I saw several animanga mentioned that have tapped into that concept -- but most of those I've not seen. (Gets used a lot in the mahou-shojo genre, and I am so NOT up on that, thanks.) The few I have seen, I bet I missed the notion completely because I just didn't have a reference for seeing mirror + sword + necklace and thinking, ooohhh, divine/mythic.
