It works as an AMV (by my standards) which is above & beyond any basic artistic value: does it make me curious about the series/movie? In this case, definitely. Even if I hadn't already seen the series, I probably would want to, after seeing this.

Btw, if you're wondering about the series, it's called Mo No No Ke, which is a spin-off of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales: a combination of Japanese folklore/myth about demons, ghosts, a dose of mystery and a heaping of horror, put through a blender of neon-colored pop art posters, kabuki, cinematic homages to the Shining and Hill House, crammed into a visual of ukiyo-e meets Peter Max meets the cover of the Sgt Pepper album*... And for all that frenzy, at heart it's incredibly layered, subtle, and at times quite chilling.


*a description cobbled together when CP and I watched the first episode and tried to put our fingers on just what was so bizarre/familiar about the visuals.

If you go to www.veoh.com and search for "bakeneko", it should list the bakeneko arc of the Ayakashi series -- which is actually three separate stories, the one that got the spin-off being the third. Email me (because I am fail and lost all email addresses... again) and I'll send you the rest of the info of where to get the Mo No No Ke episodes.

I've watched the show, and the bits of dialogue about 60% of the way through the clip are actually from the series, so the song is going to be related/remixed from the show in some way.

Not that I know who the artist is, but hopefully that will help the searching some.

Also, this show is crazy awesome.

That's a possibility, but given the quality of the remixed voices against the pace of the rest of the song, I suspect the inclusion is during the editing stage and not part of the original song. The cadence and volume is off compared to what I'd expect from a professional-level mix -- and having done such post-production dialogue-into-song mixes myself, I know it's a very very hard thing to get seamless.

So I suspect that's part of the video-editor's flash, to include the dialogue (and I think it works really well) but I'd be very surprised if it's original to the song. Must finish listening to the official Mo No No Ke soundtrack first, before I declare that definitively, I suppose!

The bakeneko arc is ep. 9, 10, and 11 of the Ayakashi series. They don't have the eps for Mo No No Ke, but I can't recall whether you have cable/broadband and can do a bit-torrent to download it.

If you scroll down to view the other options, I'd also recommend that you might like these series as well: Kurenai, which is almost like... well, it has a quality not unlike what I'd expect if Altman decided to direct anime, and the series Kurozuka, which despite its absolutely horrendous metal/thrash opening theme is has mind-screw elements along with post-apocalyptic distopia and several big names on the voice-actor stage.

I may be incorrect and I will have to check my CD's when I get home. But I think the song might be a remix of the Yoshida Brothers. If you've not heard of them they are young Masters of the Shamisen. THey do covers of rock songs, do rock songs and have collaberated with lots of big name musical figures in the states and in japan (they recently did a cover of one of the songs for the nightmare before x-mas revisited CD..its quite awsome) I'll post another comment with links and confirmation if I can~
P.s. - I really wanna watch this anime and have been meaning to..but I get so side tracked

Ok now listening to the entire video, I am 99% sure that this is indeed the yoshida brothers. I will have to check my CD's sunday night when I get home to give you a song name. But I think its been edited a little bit to add the character voices.

The original arc is available on DVD now, and Shinsen still has the Mo No No Ke (bundled) avi-version available for d/l. No word on when it'll come out on DVD, but I seem to recall that one of the two ended up on Adult Swim, so I figure it's only a matter of time.

Be warned: while the series does not cross any lines that wouldn't be allowed on public (US) television, it does have implications that are quite strong. I mean, we are talking about murder mysteries prompted by rage, envy, and despair...

Actually its not that big XD I just hear and remember things sometimes. I do have a bit of random stuffs DLed to my computer (a few gigs worth I think, but not as big as some people) But hey your always welcome to check it out if your ever in my neck of the woods.
