As far as I can see, the choice is nothing to do with suitability for the role and everything to do with politics.

Right as I read this, I just finished catching up on the latest news, including a bulletin from the McCain camp about how this election isn't about the issues but about the kind of person Americans want leading them. (Something like that; I paraphrase roughly.) My response? Uhm, well, can't I have both? Sheesh.
