The theory behind McCain's pick (at least in Alaska) seems to be that Palin is young and "fresh", hopefully providing McCain's campaign with new energy while being a relatively unknown player in the game. Some people I've talked to believe Palin's role is more for the evangelical vote than the female one, based on her ideological beliefs. It could be, but the fact is that Palin is an image of a young, enthusiastic, female politician shows that it is, in part, about gender.
Speaking of images, in my opinion, Palin has won her way through her image -- she's vibrant, young, and ready to reform our government! -- but I really hope that's not the case in this election. Her attitude and way of handling issues in Alaska is not going to work on a national stage. Either she learns quickly or she sinks. Unfortunately, I think it's the latter.
