You're thinking of Drew kids; Merriman's their 'uncle' of a sort, an old family friend. (Gumerry, they call him.) Thing is, the movie version took "Merriman is at Miss Greythorne's pretending to be her butler so he can meet Will" and turned it into "Merriman is Miss Greythorne's butler". In one swoop, they removed the "professor" from Merriman's status as a knowledgeable, educated man, knocked him down in social status, and made him culturally backwards (since most Americans, being servant = being hopelessly old-fashioned, not even mentioning our discomfort with class issues).
Oh, and, get this...
There's no Wild Hunt.
The entire culmination of the damn book, what everything is working towards, and there's no Herne the Hunter, no Wild Hunt, no Lady...
But then, you get a bible-freak rewriting a book heavily influenced by pagan/pre-xtian mythologies, and I guess no one should really be surprised.
