We're talking 1K minimum charge for the bookstore hosting the reading to shell out to Paolini before Eragon (via Knopf, his self-published version was available) was officially published. To ask an independent bookstore to shell out that kind of money, mind you that the 1K in question did not include the travel/hotel/meal expenses that were going to be added in after those expenses were determined, is kind of a stiff bill. I understand that book tours are considered part of the publisher's advertising expenses, but we'd gotten other bestsellers without so much hassel. My comment on editing is that the book would have been...well, let's just say that if the editors didn't have to fight with the author over every precious word he would probably have a bigger fan base. Then again, I'm camping with the people who are upset that he was handed what aspiring writers dream of (and what many established writers deserve) for average craftmanship. Not that he didn't work hard to do it, actually finishing two manuscripts is hard work, but it's like watching your friend pay $18.00 a bottle for Boone's Farm when you can see it's not worth all the hype.
...Can I claim sleep depravity for that analogy? Because it is mean, but I kinda like it... x_X
