I used to get really irritated by things like this. I was writing a novel and I told one of my readers that I was bored with and wanted to write an ending where the female protag acts so independently that the guy dumps her. Yanno, like real life. My friend smacked me on the arm and said, "Honey, if I want to read about real life, I'll pick up the newspaper. Don't you dare write that ending! It's fantasy."
That hit home for me that, in any work, an author needs to make a conscious decision regarding whether or
