Yep. Good research trumps many flaws, and first-person interviews are a damn good thing. I've had some of my Tetsu scenes vetted, and have yet to get a "no gay guy I know would do that," but he's also a tough one since it's not like I've found a Japanese gay guy -- and even at that, who's to say one ___ ____ person necessarily speaks for all ___ ___ people? As long as the character is consistent, and the reader can extrapolate from some kind of common experience... that's what seems to make a character believable, in my experience/opinion.
Besides, I'd never ignore an excuse for more research. Weeeee.
