It's not so much that someone wouldn't believe I wrote both Spark and Tetsu, but that someone might complain one (or both) isn't believeable. And really, I expect at some point one could also grumble that I can't write Tetsu not for his sexuality but because how could I, an American, grok what it's like to be Japanese, let alone Japanese and male?
But you're right; often what writers think is believable is a little different from what readers think. We don't always give ourselves a great deal of credit, sometimes.
