<<But the beta-readers didn't really push; they were happy with it as it was.>> one of the problems of being a beta, you are dealing with the story given and sometimes the story given is just so much fun that you are happy and pleased with it. And by being happy you may not think about digging more. I won't know that the writer is unhappy or feeling itchy with a story unless I am told or the story is startlingly missing something. Gah! Not sure I am saying this well, but the reader may not realize something is missing when first reading it. Only thru talking with the writer will a beta know that the writer isn't happy and can go back and look again.

An uncensored environment is lovely to have as I can still remember my fiction class at college that pretty much shut me down as a writer with the teacher's attitude toward what he thought I was writing. Not what I was writing mind you but...he thought that I was and hated the genre. Siigh.
