Hunh. I had so many friends telling me to read it, and it seemed promising. It seemed like the kind of quirky, mishmash of urban fantasy that'd be right up my alley. By the end of chapter one, I had to force myself to keep reading. I'd put it down, come back, try a few more pages, and I think it was chapter three before I finally admitted that whatever it takes, that book didn't have it for me. The writing was competent, solid, the dialogue good on the ear and eye, the pace decent...but something was missing. I never have put my finger on it, but it could've been magical and instead... dunno.
