You do dig deeper now, compared to the first drafts, but I think it's also a process of self-confidence, and of having a group of people who won't settle for the surface. I know having crit-readers who insist on knowing more, and more, and more, is far better than those who prefer to hold back. It means if I choose to give more, I get rewarded, and if the story doesn't demand it or can't take it, then that's okay. Like Habibti mentioned last night offline, it's an issue of expression, instead of those other crit groups, who went by omission. By allowing yourself the full range of expression, you're freer as a writer.
IMO. A'course, time will tell once we meet up with editors who tell us where to get off. Heh. Or where not to. "Look, I understand Saburo's been waiting nineteen chapters for a kiss, but groping the female protag just won't work in this story, and if you send Takeko to give me nightmares one more time, I'm gonna dump the story in the circular bin!"
just sayin it like it is
